Directing Projects

The privilege of working with and learning from many of the world’s best directors and their key collaborators informed my process. I prepare assiduously and am extremely well organized, but allow room for improvisation and organic moments to emerge. Ultimately this blend has always yielded the best results and been the most rewarding.

Responsive image Storyboarding and Editing Having a background working as a storyboard artist is an immense help in planning projects. An editing background should be a requirement for any director. You learn how shots actually cut together vs. theory. In addition, you learn how much coverage you need, how to build sequences, create tension, suspense, etc. I took storyboarding to the next level directing Deposition Testimony for New Media Legal.

Working on the creative/problem-solving side of film exposed me to exhilarating new approaches and ways to surmount hurdles as they arose.

It involved tense courtroom scenes and tricky lines of questioning in boardroom depositions with a full table of participants. I pulled tech scout data and actually built the scenes in 3D where I could use “real cameras” and lenses to line up and plan out shots. Moving around in a 3D environment allowed me greater flexibility to quickly plan and render shots. I was then able to organize these into setups so we could rotate out actors and scenes once we had the lighting set. Any director will tell you that table scenes with lots of characters are among the most difficult to shoot; maintaining eyelines, not crossing the line, establishing geography, etc. This approach helped nail that all down well before the shoot. This prep and organization paid huge dividends on the day when we ran into unexpected delays. My background as an editor let me know the exact shots we had to get in order to cut the sequences together and I was able to make the day with all the coverage we needed.
