The New World

EPK, HBO First Look and More...

I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity to learn firsthand from many of my childhood heroes in all aspects of the craft of filmmaking. Particularly interesting was working with Terrence Malick, who took then 14 years of film experience and turned it on its ear. I came from the world of everything being painstakingly planned out, storyboarded and pre-visualized so that on set it was about execution. Terry sets up flexible frameworks allowing natural moments of truth to emerge.

Terrence Malick has long been highly revered in Hollywood circles. At the time, he produced about one film per decade and all were critical masterpieces; Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line. When I heard Terry was back in production on a new film, I began a nine-month campaign to be a part of it. I went from production into a complete new end of the business producing behind-the-scenes content. I was partnered by the studio with the amazing Karina Buck and together we produced all the content for the studio. It was a life-changing experience getting to interview all of Malick’s key collaborators and discover his unique filmmaking process.

Chris Cummings is smart, creative, capable, instinctive, and a real lover of movies. It has been a pleasure working with him and I look forward to our next project together.

SARAH GREEN PRODUCER THE NEW WORLD

Responsive image When Malick does a film, actors come running. The cast included Colin Farrell, Christian Bale, Christopher Plummer, Wes Studi, David Thewlis, Ben Mendelsohn, and newcomer Q’Orianka Kilcher. The film was shot by my favorite cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezski (eight-time Oscar nominee and three-time Oscar winner). Interviewing producer Sara Green, lead editor Richard Chew (Star Wars), the actors and all the department heads were also highlights from the project. I had been editing for years, but this was the first time I learned all the elements of post-production working with post houses. We created deliverables for theatrical, broadcast, DVD and online.
